Duvet Tog Ratings Explained

All types of duvets have a ‘tog rating’ – a term used to describe the warmth of a duvet and how insulating it will feel to sleep under.

If you want to achieve a good night’s sleep, it is important to understand which tog rating is best for you and for the time of the year/season.

Having the correct tog rating will help to regulate your body temperature and ensure that you sleep better.

Our tog rating scale starts at a cool 4.5 tog, for summer use and warmer climates; rising to a thermal 18 tog (all Seasons), for winter use and colder climates.

The tog rating demonstrates how effective the duvet is at trapping air and providing warmth – in a nutshell, the higher the tog rating, the warmer the duvet.

You will most likely not want to sleep under the same tog duvet all year round due to the changing of seasons.

Generally, you sleep best if your body remains at a cool to normal temperature throughout the night – 18C/65F is an ideal temperature for your bedroom.

You will also sleep better and consistently, if your duvet is the right tog for the time of the year/season as shown below:

  • Summer = 4.5 – 9 tog
  • Autumn = 9 tog – 13.5 tog
  • Winter =13.5 tog+
  • Spring = 4.5 – 10.5 tog

Remember, not everyone is the same when it comes to body temperature.
